Stay Strong, Stay Healthy
The program’s goal is to improve health and quality of life. The hour long sessions meet twice each week. They include warm-up exercises, strengthening exercises with or without weights, and cool-down stretches. Participants are also encouraged to do the exercises on their own once more during the week. Over the eight weeks, participants learn the exercises and begin to improve strength and balance.

This older adult strength training program was developed by a team of Missouri University Extension specialists who wanted to meet the increasing need for a follow-up program to the 8-week Stay Strong, Stay Healthy Level 1 (SSSH-1) program. The SSSH-2 program was adopted by K-State Research and Extension in 2017.
The goal of the program is to build on the fitness base acquired from SSSH-1 by adding new and more complex exercises. The neuromuscular system quickly adapts to stressors and loads, and must be challenged differently for gains in strength, flexibility and balance to continue. Therefore, it is necessary to alter the exercise routine regularly. SSSH-2 is designed to challenge older adults in new and different ways and to improve activities of daily living.
